The Legends of Nottingham Forest
If you've ever wanted to know anything about the players who helped us to win the FA Cup or what it was like to score the winning goal in a European Cup Final, then a new book on the club will provide all the answers.
One hundred of the Reds greatest-ever stars are featured in 'The Legends of Nottingham Forest' a new publication from the Breedon Publishing House.
The author is Nottinghamshire-born sports broadcaster and journalist Dave Bracegirdle, best known for his work on Sky Sports' Soccer Specials and a frequent visitor to The City Ground since the mid-1960's.
"The first professional game I saw was a Division One match between Forest and Liverpool in October 1966", recalls Dave. "I was eight years old and had been pestering to go to a game for weeks. The surprise was kept from me until around an hour before kick-off. I thought we were just going shopping in Nottingham but the emergence of my uncle Bryan - a season ticket holder - gave the game away!"
Roger Hunt's equaliser earned the Merseysiders' a draw that day, after the home side had led through Joe Baker, an automatic selection for Dave's book. He says: "Joe was a cult figure at Forest - even though he'd earlier achieved similar status at Hibernian and Arsenal, as well as becoming one of the first British players to play in Italy, with Torino."
He adds: "All of the obvious contenders are included, the likes of Brian and Nigel Clough, Stuart Pearce, Ian Storey-Moore, Bob McKinlay, Wally Ardron and so on - but there's room for those who've entered the club's folklore thanks to one particular performance or feat, such as Bryn Gunn, emerging from nowhere to win a European Cup winners' medal in 19880 or Nigel Jemson who became a Wembley match-winner ten years later."
The author isn't specific about his own favourite 'Forester', although he does claim to have a soft spot for three City Ground regulars. "Working in the media I've got to know Kenny Burns, John McGovern and Garry Birtles a little more over the years and I've always admired the passion they've continued to show for the club. No one could question their commitment as Forest players and it's something they've all retained to this day!"
Each of the Legends has his own story to tell, from the likes of the 19th century pioneering eccentric Tinsley Lindley right through to current hero Kris Commons, making this book essential reading for Forest supporters of all ages.
'The Legends of Nottingham Forest', published by Breedon is available now from all good book shops, priced at £16.99.
The Competition to win a copy of the book has now closed and the winners have been drawn from those giving the correct answer to the question below as Stuart Pearce.
