Nottingham Forest were brought back down to earth after Saturday's win by a single goal from a determined Doncaster side enjoying their first win at the City Ground.
Doncaster created more chances and were awarded with a goal just before the half time whistle. Forest, on the other hand, struggled to break down the Doncaster defence and didn't have a single shot on target in the first half.
Apart from a short period the second half produced a poor display of football by Forest while Doncaster did enough to hold onto their lead.
Doncaster had a chance to take the lead when they were awarded a free kick for handball on the edge of the box, inside the D, which the Forest players objected to vociferously. James Coppinger took it well but Paul Smith, defending at the Bridgford End, did even better to stretch up and make a good catch.
There were cries all round the ground for a penalty when Junior Agogo went down after contact with Adam Lockwood on the left side of the box but the referee waved play on.
With both sides pushing forward, Doncaster had a chance from a snap shot by Coppinger, which was blocked by Wes Morgan and put out for a corner.
Forest were quickly on the attack with a good run by Agogo. He fed the ball to KrisCommons who chose to shoot instead of crossing to an unmarked Grant Holt, but his effort went flying over the bar.
Doncaster continued to put pressure on Forest. First Morgan had to dive to block Jason Price's effort and then Brian Stock shot across the face of goal and Forest were lucky that the ball trickled out the other side.
An accidental clash of heads between Julian Bennett and Mark McCammon left the Doncaster player laid out on the pitch, requiring a stretcher to take him off after some prolonged and intensive treatment to his shoulder.
The atmosphere before this was subdued but it was even quieter after the enforced substitution.
But the silence was broken when Doncaster took the lead with a stunning goal by Stock, who sent the ball flying from 30 yards into the top corner, giving Smith no chance.
With five minutes of stoppage time Forest tried to get a quick equalizer but came no nearer to the Doncaster goal than they had all through the half.
Lewis McGugan, who had impressed in the first half with the quality of his passing, limped off at half time, as some Forest supporters predictably booed their side off.
Doncaster dominated from the start of the second half with Forest still struggling to put any moves together, the only way forward seeming to be over the top.
In a rare break Commons made a run over half the length of the pitch but the Doncaster defence blocked him and Agogo who had made the run alongside him and Commons eventually ran the ball out.
The half was only six minutes old when Nathan Tyson replaced Grant Holt as Forest struggled to find the back of the net.
As the crowd began to get behind Forest they started to push forward and a shot by Breckin led to an acrobatic overhead attempt by James Perch but the ball went wide.
And they came closer with a swerving left-footer by Commons which Neil Sullivan had to put round the post for a corner.
As Forest kept up the momentum a cross by John Curtis was nodded back by Tyson to Agogo who couldn't find the target from inside the box.
Ian Breckin was replaced by Luke Chambers with 17 minutes to go, with Curtis taking the captain's armband.
Ten minutes later McGugan was replaced by Scott Dobie and his first touch was a header on goal but there was nothing behind it and Sullivan made an easy save.
The remainder of the half was scrappy to say the least and to add to Forest's problems Bennett picked up his tenth yellow card in stoppage time, earning him a two match ban.
The smallest home crowd of the season for a League game started to drift away before the final whistle had gone and the boos started again.
