Luton outplayed Forest for the second time this season and deserved the win that takes them into the next round of the FA Cup.
Luton dominated for much of the first half and with some good, accurate passing, they created a number of chances. But four good saves from Paul Smith enabled Forest to go in at half time without conceding a goal.
But Luton scored early in the second half and, although Forest looked better than they had in the first, the Luton defence were excellent and they blocked the few chances that Forest had.
It was almost 20 minutes before either side had a good shot on target, with the home side having the first chance. Matthew Spring's diving header from the edge of the penalty area found David Bell on the edge of the six-yard box. Paul Smith was able to parry his shot away and David Edwards almost got on the end of the rebound.
Smith, by far the busier of the two keepers, had an easy save to make when Darren Currie volleyed from the centre of the penalty area.
In spite of getting forward on a number of occasions, Forest had no real chances for much of the first half and wasted opportunities from several corners.
Luton made a quick break when Bell got away from Matt Lockwood and aimed for the top corner, forcing Smith to react quickly to get up and palm the ball round the post.
And they made another strong break with Bell once more in possession. He sent the ball forward to Currie who got in ahead of Neil Lennon and side-footed the ball to Kelvin Andrew whose shot had Smith diving away to his left to make another save.
Luton were totally dominating by the end of the half and Forest hardly got out of their own half for the last 15 minutes.
Luton got the goal they had been threatening from a corner eight minutes into the second half. Currie's shot found Spring whose cross from the back edge of the penalty area found Andrew who put the ball in from the back post.
Forest were lucky only to concede a free kick when Matt Lockwood handled the ball right on the edge of the penalty area. Currie's shot took a deflection off Coyne and the ball was cleared by James Perch.
Forest responded well to going behind and started to push forward. Grant Holt crossed to Lockwood who shot on the volley from 18 yards, forcing Dean Brill to dive to his right to make his first save of the game.
But Luton still looked dangerous and when Andrew's cross was volleyed goalwards by Edwards, Smith made another save, touching the ball round the post for a corner.
With just under 20 minutes remaining Junior Agogo and Kris Commons replaced Tyson and McGugan as Forest still struggled to get on the scoresheet.
Forest's best move of the game came when the ball was put through to Chris Cohen who made a run down the middle to the edge of the penalty area. He had Brill beaten but his shot wasn't strong enough to take the ball over the line and Jaroslaw Fojut was able to get back in time to make the clearance.
James Perch produced three sliding tackles in as many minutes to keep Forest's chances alive as Luton continued to press forward.
With Luton defending well Forest were unable to produce another chance until stoppage time when Commons' cross found Holt, but he was predictably beaten by a Luton defender.
